Please drink a pint of water an hour prior to your scan, and do not empty your bladder before the examination.

This scan is carried out from 11 weeks to 13 weeks and six days. The scan is usually performed transabdominally but in a few cases, it may be necessary to do the examination transvaginally.

• To date the pregnancy accurately: This is particularly relevant for women who cannot recall the date of their last period, have an irregular menstrual cycle, or who have conceived whilst breastfeeding or soon after stopping the pill. We measure the size of the fetus and from this we calculate the expected date of delivery.
• To diagnose multiple pregnancy: Approximately 2% of natural conceptions and 10% of assisted conceptions result in multiple pregnancy. Ultrasound scanning can determine if both babies are developing normally and if the babies share the same placenta which can lead to problems in the pregnancy. In such cases, it would be advisable to monitor the pregnancy more closely.
• To diagnose major fetal abnormalities: Some major abnormalities may be visible at this gestation. However, it will still be necessary to have a 20-week anomaly scan.
• To diagnose early miscarriage: Unfortunately, in 2% of women who attend for a nuchal scan it is found that the fetus has died, often several weeks before and without any warning.
• To assess the risks of Down’s syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities: The NT/NB Scan can be combined with a Double Marker Test (Combined First Trimester Screening)Each woman will be given an estimate of her individual risk for this pregnancy. This is calculated by taking into account the age of the mother, measurement of two hormones in the mother’s blood, and the scan findings of nuchal translucency thickness, nasal bone, blood flow through the fetal heart, and ductus venosus, and fetal abnormalities.

GROWTH SCAN (16 to 24 Weeks)

• All measurements recorded and checked

Measuring your baby helps to check his or her growth rate at your particular week of pregnancy. By comparing these measurements to what is considered ‘normal’ at any given stage, it will allow us to check if your child is developing as planned.

ANOMALY SCAN (Level 2 Scan) (18 to 21 Weeks) 

• Detailed analysis of anatomical structures.
• Checks specific risks at this stage of pregnancy.
• Placental position identified if possible.
• All findings and notes on a report for you to take away.

Looking at your baby in detail helps to check his or her well-being during a particular section of your pregnancy. WELL BEING SCAN (25 to 40 Weeks) 

Checks the well being of your baby during the latter part of your pregnancy

By booking a Well Being Scan at Noble, our friendly and professional radiologist will take measurements of your baby, as well as other such checks during the third trimester of your pregnancy including the position of your placenta and the amount of amniotic fluid present. This will give you an indication of how your baby is prepossessing as you near the final stages of your pregnancy.

It is not necessary to have a full bladder when undergoing a Well Being Scan. Feel free to eat and drink as normal on the day of your scan and wear loose clothing during your appointment as the sonographer will need to direct the probe at your abdomen.
